2009 August Tournament |
||
| As everyone knows, 2009 is shaping up to be a very challenging and difficult year for the U.S. economy. Companies and organizations everywhere are doing everything possible to preserve resources in the hope of weathering the financial storm and emerging from this period stronger and intact for the future. Special Olympics Massachusetts is no exception. Over the past year, SOMA has had to make many difficult decisions as we face a decline of nearly 20 percent of our operating budget. In order to maintain as much of the core programs as possible, SOMA has had to decrease our staff and to modify Winter Games by eliminating the Friday night Opening Ceremony and overnight accommodations. This economic climate will impact August Tournament as well. It will be conducted on a modified schedule due to its budget being reduced by more than $100,000. Competitions will be held on Saturday and Sunday, August 8th and 9th. Participants will report directly to their competition venues on either Saturday or Sunday morning. In addition, please keep the following in mind as you plan for the weekend: * No overnight accommodations will be offered or authorized using local program funds. * A BBQ meal will be provided to all registered athletes, coaches and Unified Partners. * The day will conclude with the completion of competition. There will be no dinner/dance. * We anticipate a 10 a.m. start to accommodate commuting time. There will also be changes to how the five (5) August sports will be conducted: * SOFTBALL – Will be two (2), one (1) day tournaments at Nonotuck Park. Half the teams will compete on Saturday and half will compete on Sunday * BOCCE – Will be two (2), one (1) day tournaments at Nonotuck Park. Half the teams will compete on Saturday and half will compete on Sunday * FISHING – Will be a one (1) day tournament at Quabbin Reservoir on Saturday * GOLF – Will be a one (1) day tournament at Stow Acres on Sunday. * CYCLING – Will be a one (1) day tournament at Swift River Elementary School Complex Saturday. These measures are being taken in an effort to preserve all the competition aspects of the event which we know are the most important to our athletes. We hope this is a temporary measure. As we continue to strive to provide the very best opportunities to as many Special Olympics athletes as possible, your support and consideration are greatly appreciated. |
